Race: Vuelta Independencia Nacional Republica Dominicana, Stage 1
Start/Finish: Santo Domingo – Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Distance: 184 kilometers
Overview: Team Novo Nordisk kicked off its first Vuelta Independencia Nacional Republica Dominicana in the Dominican Republic today. The race began under slightly rainy conditions and followed the coast for a mostly flat stage. After a few small breakaway attempts, the peloton remained bunched together until kilometer 115, when three riders broke free. The group grew to sixteen before approaching the finish and Eduardo Colon (Puerto Rico) beat out the others in a sprint finish to take first. Team Novo Nordisk’s David Lozano (ESP) finished at the front of the main group in 20th place and James Glasspool (AUS) was close behind in 22nd.
“I felt great all day and the team rode together well for most of the stage,” said Lozano. “At the end we just missed the breakaway, but we are going to try again tomorrow. We gained some good experience today and are ready to fight again on the next stage.”
Results: Eduardo Colon (Puerto Rico) took first place in front of Boris Garene (Team Differdange – Losch) in second and John P. Suarez (EPM-UNE-Área Metropolitana) in third.
Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling squad, continues racing on stage 2 of the Vuelta Dominicana tomorrow, a 186-km route from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo.
