Kevin de Mesmaeker: Accomplishment

02 December 2013

From Men’s Pro rider Kevin de Mesmaeker

If someone told me a year ago that I would be a professional cyclist, I wouldn’t have believe them. Now, here I am, a professional rider with Team Novo Nordisk. I’m very happy and excited that the team’s given me the chance to be a professional rider- and it’s a dream come true.

In Belgium, diabetes is very well known; however the combination of diabetes and cycling at a pro level is not. So I want to show the people of Belgium what is possible with diabetes, even winning races at the highest level! I want to be an inspiration for other uncertain diabetics, to show them they don’t have to be afraid to have dreams, and that they can accomplish any dream with diabetes.

I hope to ride with Team Novo Nordisk for as long as possible to achieve my own dreams. I also want to help my teammates accomplish their dreams, because without a team spirit, nobody can win a big race. I’m still a young rider, but I’m getting stronger every year. So maybe (and I honestly believe this is possible) I can be the first rider with diabetes to win a big Pro Tour!
