Selcuk, Turkey — Team Novo Nordisk’s Javier Megias climbs to a 10th place finish on Stage 6 of the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey.
“Our primary target was to get Javier into the top 10 today,” Team Novo Nordisk General Manager Vassili Davidenko said. “It was really hard at the end, but he was fighting and as a result earned the team its first top 10 ever at this race.”
Friday’s 183-km stage featured two categorized climbs, both in the final part of the race. According to Davidenko, the team’s strategy was to safeguard Megias until the final 10 kilometers. Once on the final climb, it would be up to the Spaniard to show his climbing skills.
“We worked hard today to make sure Javier could be there on the final climb,” teammate Martijn Verschoor said. “It was great teamwork and everything came together as planned.”
As the peloton ascended Bulbul Mountain, an elite group of less than 20 riders emerged, including Megias. Adam Yates (Orica-GreenEDGE) attacked inside the final kilometers and no one else followed. The Brit soloed to the win and moved into the overall race lead. Megias finished 10th, 26 seconds behind Yates.
“My teammates did an amazing job and I am super grateful for them,” Megias said. “It was a happy day for us getting our first top 10 at this race.”
Megias’ solid performance moved him into 15th overall in the general classification. With only sprint stages remaining, the overall classification isn’t expected to change before the eight-day stage race finishes in Istanbul on Sunday.
For the final two stages, Team Novo Nordisk will look to sprinters Andrea Peron and Martijn Verschoor to build on the team’s success. Saturday’s Stage 7 of the 50th Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey is a 136-km race from Kusadasi to Izmir.
