Race: Tour of Hainan/ Stage 1
Overview: On Monday, Team Novo Nordisk kicked off the Tour of Hainan with an 85.4-kilometer circuit race around Chengmai. All the Team Novo Nordisk riders were motivated and active at the front from the start. Nicolas Lefrançois and five other riders composed the day’s main break. The escapees were caught 15 km from the finish, and then Team Novo Nordisk’s attention turned to sprinter Andrea Peron. A chaotic sprint finish ensued with Moreno Hofland (Belkin Pro Cycling) sprinting to the win, while Peron finished in 11th place.
“Unfortunately, I wasn’t in the right position when we got to the one kilometer flag,” Peron said. “With the travel and jet lag, I knew today might not be my best day. I’m looking forward to the next few days and hoping for even better results.”
Results: Moreno Hofland (Belkin Pro Cycling) took the win ahead of Andrea Palini (Lampre-Merida) and Ondrej Rybin (Team Dukla Praha).
The world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team continues racing at the Tour of Hainan on Tuesday with Stage 2. At 207.2-km, it is the longest stage of the race. The stage begins in Chengmai and features three intermediate sprints before finishing in Haikou.
