Race: Tour of Hainan/ Stage 8
Start/Finish: Wuzhishan- Danzhou
Distance: 154.1 kilometers
Overview: Monday’s penultimate stage of the Tour of Hainan saw the Team Novo Nordisk riders tackle another wet day in China. The 154.1-kilometer stage began in Wuzhishan and featured two early categorized climbs before a downhill finish into Danzhou. The peloton splintered into several groups going over the first climb, a Category 1 situated only 8.8-km into the race. Team Novo Nordisk’s Andrea Peron and Scott Ambrose made the large front group, while the chasing groups were never able to reconnect. In the finish, Peron sprinted to ninth place in the same time as stage winner Niccolo Bonifazio (Lampre-Merida).
“Although I’m still not quite 100 percent after all my crashes this year,” Peron said. “tomorrow is our last chance for the 2014 season- and we will be giving it our all.”
Results: Niccolo Bonifazio (Lampre-Merida) sprinted to the win ahead of Jonathan Cantwell (Drapac Professional Cycling) and Andrea Palini (Lampre-Merida).
Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team, finishes the Tour of Hainan and its 2014 season on Tuesday with the race’s final stage. Stage 9 is a 165.7-km race beginning in Danzhou and finishing in Chengmai. The stage looks to be one for the sprinters with two intermediate sprints and a flat finish.
