Race: Post Danmark Rundt/ Stage 1
Start/Finish: Hobro to Mariager, Denmark
Distance: 157 km
Overview: Team Novo Nordisk’s Chris Williams kicked off the Post Danmark Rundt in style, featuring in the day’s six-man breakaway. The escapees got away early into the 157-km stage and gained a gap of more than two minutes before getting reeled in with 27 km remaining before the finish in Mariager.
“I was determined to get in the break today and represent our sponsors in front of their home country,” Williams said. “For now, I will rest my legs, but hopefully I will get another chance later on in the race.”
Wednesday’s race also counted as Team Novo Nordisk stagiaire Scott Ambrose’s professional debut.
“I was so nervous starting today’s race. It was my first pro race,” 19-year-old Ambrose said. “It feels good having it behind me. Hopefully now the nerves will settle down and I will be able to just focus on the race.”
Results: Magnus Cort Nielsen (Cult Energy Vital Water) sprinted to the win ahead of Jasper De Buyst (Topsport Vlaanderen – Baloise) and Valerio Agnoli (Astana Pro Team).
The world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team continues racing at the Post Danmark Rundt on Thursday with Stage 2 beginning in Skive. The 194-km race features four categorized climbs and two intermediate sprints before finishing in Aarhus.
