2017 PostNord Danmark Rundt - Stage 1

Race: Tour of Denmark, PostNord Danmark Rundt, Stage 1

Start/Finish: Frederiksberg/Kalundborg, Denmark

Distance: 176.6 kilometers

Kalundborg, Denmark — Andrea Peron suffered a crash on Stage 1 of the PostNord Danmark Rundt, which forced the Italian sprinter to withdraw from the five-day race.

Peron went down in a large crash around the 100-kilometer mark at a point where the road narrowed. After receiving immediate attention on the side of the road, he was transported to the hospital.

“X-rays confirmed a non-displaced, non-operative fracture to his left clavicle. He will need six to 10 weeks off from racing to heal from his injuries,” explained Team Novo Nordisk Doctor David Castol.

Throughout Tuesday’s 176.6-kilometer race, the peloton fought through rainy and windy conditions. A six-man breakaway had earned a maximum gap of five minutes, but in an unusual turn of events, the escapees took a wrong turn off course and officials neutralized the race to reestablish their gap. The escapees were reeled in as the race approached Kalundborg.

Immediately, attacks flew as the peloton contested three finishing circuits. The high pace and strong winds splintered the field into several groups and in the end, European Under23 champion Casper Pederson (Giant-Castelli) soloed to the win ahead of a 40-man chase group.

Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team, is currently competing in two races: the Tour of China and the PostNord Danmark Rundt. Wednesday serves as a rest day for the five-stage Chinese race while Stage 2 of the PostNord Danmark Rundt is a 183.8-km run from Svendborg to Odense.

2017 PostNord Danmark Rundt - Stage 2

Race: Tour of Denmark, PostNord Danmark Rundt, Stage 2

Start/Finish: Svendborg/Odense, Denmark

Distance: 183.8 kilometers

Odense, Denmark — Partway through the second stage of the PostNord Danmark Rundt, race organizers enacted the UCI’s Extreme Weather Protocol and canceled the stage to ensure riders’ safety.

The 183.8-kilometer stage began with powerful winds and heavy rains in Svendborg. A four-man break escaped and earned a maximum gap of 5:30 while the rest of the race experienced innumerable flats and multiple crashes. As the peloton reached the coast, the winds picked up and it was too dangerous to continue. Initially, organizers neutralized the race until the feed zone, but when it became clear that conditions were only deteriorating, they canceled the remainder of the stage.

Fabio Calabria

“The weather was really crazy with wild winds and heavy rains. From the start, this played havoc on the race. The rain was on and off and definitely heavy, and we also had to deal with lots of standing water. At times, it was so windy that it was difficult to keep the bikes going in the right direction and staying on the road.

About an hour into the stage, we reached an exceptionally windy part of the course. First, we rode neutral to see if the conditions would change but when it was evident they were only getting worse, they canceled.

Enforcing the Extreme Weather Protocol was a good thing today and showed organizers were looking out for the health and safety of the riders. I’m really grateful they made that call, and I’m thankful for the decision.

Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team, is currently competing in two races: the Tour of China and the PostNord Danmark Rundt. Thursday’s Stage 3 of the Tour of China is a 197-km race from Xiyang to Yunzhuhu while Stage 3 of the PostNord Danmark Rundt is 183.6-km run from Otterup to Vejle.

2017 PostNord Danmark Rundt - Stage 3

Race: Tour of Denmark, PostNord Danmark Rundt, Stage 3

Start/Finish: Otterup/Vejle, Denmark

Distance: 183.6 kilometers

Vejle, Denmark — Moving the PostNord Danmark Rundt later in the race calendar is definitely delivering some dynamic weather conditions. Following Stage 2, which was canceled due to the UCI’s Extreme Weather Protocol, Thursday’s stage was another intense day battling through heavy rains.

The 183.6-kilometer stage began in Otterup under slightly misleading skies with the peloton setting off in the sunshine and with 15C temperatures. A six-man break escaped and earned a gap of more than five minutes.

As the peloton reached the feed zone, intense rain showers fell, which led to several crashes and made for a nervous finale. By the time the escapees were caught, the chase was reduced to around 30 riders while the rest of the peloton was completely shattered.

Attacks flew on the challenging finishing laps around Vejle, but it was Trek-Segafredo that played the best race. In the final kilometers, Jasper Stuyven and Mads Pedersen launched one-two attacks that paid off with Pedersen soloing to the win.

Joonas Henttala

“From the feed zone on, we got some pretty intense showers, and it stayed that way until the end of the race. That made the bunch even more nervous–the roads here are pretty slippery. It was overall an intense, fast day with some steep climbs and crosswinds. It was hard racing.”

The world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team continues competing in two races: the Tour of China and the PostNord Danmark Rundt. Friday serves as the battle of the time trials. Stage 4 of the Tour of China is a short 3.3-km flat race against the clock while at the PostNord Danmark Rundt the riders tackle a 17.8-km individual time trial on an out-and-back course from the Randers Rainforest.

2017 PostNord Danmark Rundt - Stage 4

Race: Tour of Denmark, PostNord Danmark Rundt, Stage 4

Start/Finish: Randers/Randers, Denmark

Distance: 17.8 kilometers

Randers, Denmark — Friday’s individual time trial took place on a 17.8-kilometer out-and-back course that started and finished near the indoor rainforest in Randers. The first riders tackled the course under clear skies. Yet moments after Romain Gioux crossed the finish line, the skies opened up and heavy rains and even hail fell on the riders.

Matthias Brandle (Trek-Segafredo) laid down the fastest time in 20:57. Even while racing on slick roads and heavy rains, Charles Planet was Team Novo Nordisk’s fastest rider, finishing 1:59 behind Brandle. After taking over the lead on Stage 3, Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) remained the overall race leader.

David Lozano

“Today we awoke to our first sunny day. I was expecting the nicest day of the week, and then the rains started while I was out on course. I definitely had to take extra caution in the turns. At that point, I focused on just making it a solid time trial; it wasn’t super fast but not super slow. Now I’m completely focused on tomorrow’s final stage.”

The world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team continues competing in two races: the Tour of China and the PostNord Danmark Rundt. Saturday serves as the final stage of the PostNord Danmark Rundt while it is a transfer day at the Tour of China. Stage 5 in Denmark is a 198-km race that begins in Ebeltoft and features seven challenging laps on a circuit around Aarhus.

2017 PostNord Danmark Rundt - Stage 5

Race: Tour of Denmark, PostNord Danmark Rundt, Stage 5

Start/Finish: Ebeltoft/Aarhus, Denmark

Distance: 198 kilometers

Aarhus, Denmark — The rain finally relented for the final stage of the PostNord Danmark Rundt. The riders set off from Ebeltoft for a 198-kilometer run that ended with seven laps around Aarhus. For the first time throughout the five-day stage race, rain only fell on the peloton for a brief 10 minutes.

The day saw a seven-man breakaway earn more than a five-minute advantage but as the chasing peloton brought it down to within a minute, Martin Mortensen (ColoQuick Cult) attacked and only a few of his initial breakaway companions could find his wheel. Once this break was reeled in, several new attacks followed but the race came down to a 30-man front group taking on the sprint with Max Walscheid (Team Sunweb) securing the stage win. Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) took the overall race victory.

David Lozano

“Like every day this week, it was really hard to get in the breakaway. We also had rain for at least 10 minutes, which was at least less than the other days. In the end, I went full gas for the last lap to help the guys for position in the last lap. Aarhus was a good finish, but I have to admit that I missed the finish in Copenhagen with all of the Novo Nordisk fans.”

While the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team is finished at the PostNord Danmark Rundt, the team continues at the Tour of China. Sunday’s final Stage 5 is a 128.5-km race with a start and finish in Anshun.
