Tour de Tochigi - Stage 1

Race: Tour of Taihu Lake, prologue

Start/Finish: Wuxi/Wuxi, China

Distance: 5.3 kilometers

WUXI, CHINA – A flat, prologue start to the Tour of Taihu Lake on Tuesday as Team Novo Nordisk launched into October racing at the Asia Tour.

Chris Williams had the squad’s top time on the 5.3km circuit in Wuxi, a city of nearly 6 million on the Yangtze River. Heat and humidity played a small part as riders raced at full speed against the clock, with day time temperatures around 80ºF/27ºC on a wide road with few technical turns.

Canada’s Guillaume Boivin won the opening stage, less than half a second ahead of Romania’s Serghei Tsvetcov and that much faster than New Zealand’s Morgan Smith.

The 2017 Tour of Taihu will race seven stages around Lake Taihu, west of Shanghai and home to three major metropolitan areas, including Wuxi, Huzhou and Suzhou. More than 30 million people live in and around the race course.

David Lozano:

Today was a highway prologue – not technical, absolutely flat, and maybe four or five corners for a 5.3km stage. I’m happy to be back in China because my last time here was in 2012 and I’m really looking forward to find a stage that suits me.”

Team Novo Nordisk Sport Director  Pavel Cherkasov:

Quentin was our first rider today, and Charles rode last. Chris Williams was in the middle and showed our best time of the day, and he spent a long time in the top 10. Tomorrow the road racing begins.”

Team Novo Nordisk races all week in China at the Tour of Taihu Lake, then moves across to Japan for a pair of one-day races before finishing the 2017 season at China’s Tour of Hainan.

Tour de Tochigi - Stage 2

Race: Tour De Tochigi, Stage 3

Start/Finish: Nasu/Moka, Japan

Distance: 146.6 kilometers

Moka, Japan —Team Novo Nordisk’s Umberto Poli scored a top 10 finish on Sunday’s final stage of the three-day Tour de Tochigi.

The 146.6-kilometer race began with many attacks and on the first categorized climb, the race splintered into two groups. A flurry of attacks followed and finally four riders escaped. One rider dropped from the break and the remaining three stayed away until the final 20 kilometers when that group fractured. One last rider held on until the final kilometers where the chasing peloton reeled him in.

Heading towards the finish, Sam Brand, Emanuel Mini, and Rik van IJzendoorn put the 21-year-old Poli into strong position for the sprint. He battled for position and continuously worked to close gaps over the final kilometer. In the finish, Raymond Kreder (Team – Ukyo) took the win with Poli finishing in eighth place.

Umberto Poli

“We had a good team today and a good result. After the start, the team tried to get into the breakaway, but the break wouldn’t go.

On the climb, attacks started and Sam and I finished towards the front at the top. On the descent, there were lots of attacks and counterattacks and eventually four riders got free after 100 kilometers. The peloton was down to about 40 riders and we worked well together to catch the break in the final kilometers. In the final, Ema, Sam and Rik did a very good job helping me and I’m happy with the result.”

Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team, returns to racing at the one-day GP Miguel Indurain on Saturday.
