Race: Tour de San Luis, Stage 2

Start/Finish: La Punta/ Mirador del Potrero, Argentina

Distance: 185.3-kilometers

Mirador del Potrero, Argentina — Team Novo Nordisk’s Kevin De Mesmaeker withdrew after an early crash on Stage 2 of the Tour de San Luis.

“I was really motivated to get into the break today, and I think I paid for my enthusiasm,” De Mesmaeker said. “I was pushing to make the break and suddenly I crashed. I’m okay, just some road rash and little pains. From what everyone says, it could have been much worse. I’m thankful for my helmet.”

In Tuesday’s stage, five riders escaped early in the 185.3-kilometer race that began in La Punta and ended with a summit finish on the Mirador del Potrero. The quintet built a gap of more than eight minutes before being caught at the base of the final climb. Multiple attacks followed but it was Argentinian National Champion Daniel Diaz (Funvic – Sao Jose dos Campos) who soloed to the win and into the overall leader’s jersey.

Results: Daniel Diaz (Funvic – Sao Jose dos Campos) took the win six seconds ahead of Rodolfo Torres (Colombia National Team). Kleber DaSilva (Funvic-Sao Jose dos Campos) rounded out the podium.

Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team, continues racing at the Tour de San Luis on Wednesday with Stage 3, a 176.3-km race that begins in Concaran. The riders will tackle two intermediate sprints before what should be an uphill sprint finish in Juana Koslay.
