Race: Tour de San Luis, Stage 7
Start/Finish: San Luis/ San Luis, Argentina
San Luis, Argentina — Team Novo Nordisk’s Martijn Verschoor sprinted to 15th place on the final stage of the Tour de San Luis.
Right from the start of Stage 7, Team Novo Nordisk’s David Lozano fought hard to get into the break. He was out front with several other riders, but the group failed to work together ascending the day’s only categorized climb and was brought back. Next, a large nine-man group escaped and built a gap of three minutes on the 122.4-kilometers stage. Inside the final 10 km, all the escapees were swept up and the race came down to a bunch sprint. Mark Cavendish (Etixx-QuickStep) sprinted to the win.
“The final was so fast; I think we went 70 kph,” Verschoor explained. “It wasn’t too difficult today, but it got hot. If you kept drinking all day, then it wasn’t too bad out there.”
Results: Mark Cavendish (Etixx-QuickStep) won ahead of Fernando Gaviria (Colombian National Team) and Jakub Mareczeko (Italy). Daniel Diaz (Funvic-Sao Jose Dos Campos) won the overall race.
Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team, resumes racing on February 1st with Le Tour de Filipinas.
