Hometown: Koksijde/Oostduinkerke, Belgium
Position: Team Doctor
"I feel it is important to use my knowledge and experience at the top levels of cycling to help young athletes realize their dreams. I feel fortunate to contribute and change history in how athletes with type 1 diabetes manage their condition and perform at their best. This team inspires, educates and empowers people all over the world affected by diabetes and I am grateful for the trust they put in me for this ground-breaking opportunity."

Dr. Peter Lagrou joined Team Novo Nordisk in 2017 after the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team lured him away from a World Tour team.

Born in Roeselare, Belgium, Dr. Lagrou’s medical career began as a pharmacist before becoming a trained physician. He received his M.D., Masters in Sports Medicine, and training as a specialist in Acute Medicine, all from the Catholic University of Leuven. Additionally, he obtained a title as specialist in Clinical Biology, a post-graduate degree in Environmental Remediation Sciences from the University of Ghent and completed a training in Sports Nutrition at the Erasmus High School in Brussels.

Before Team Novo Nordisk, Dr. Lagrou worked with the pro cycling, Team Tinkoff. After working with some of the biggest cycling teams in the world and serving as a physician to some of the greatest champions in cycling, including Alberto Contador and Peter Sagan, Dr. Lagrou felt that working for Team Novo Nordisk allowed him to have a genuine impact on the world and change how people view diabetes.

In addition to working as Team Novo Nordisk’s Medical Director, Dr. Lagrou continues working as an emergency physician at AZ West Hospital Veurne and a sports physician at the Sports Center The Wave Oostduinkerke.

Dr. Lagrou remains active and enjoys riding a bike and taking walks on the beach. In his free time, he likes reading, dining out with friends, traveling, and staying up-to-date with sports medicine literature.

When not on the road with the team or working hours at the hospital or at the sports clinic, Dr. Lagrou spends time with his wife, Maria Concepcion Hamoy between their home in Belgium and Valencia, Spain. He has four lovely daughters and two cats.

Dr. Lagrou supports Belgian Cycling – Wielerbond Vlaanderen, VVS: Vlaamse Vereniging voor Sportgeneeskunde (Flemish Assoc.
