Position: Head of Research


Sam holds a dual role as the Head of Research for Team Novo Nordisk and a Research Fellow at the University of Bern, Switzerland.

Originally from the UK, Sam completed his PhD at Liverpool John Moores University before moving to Toronto to undertake postdoctoral research in the area of type 1 diabetes and exercise. During his studies, Sam won multiple awards, including a prestigious Young Investigator Award at the European College of Sport Science annual meeting in both 2017 and 2018.

Sam’s role within Team Novo Nordisk is to lead and coordinate the research activities. His aim is to apply the findings from the multiple research projects he is involved with in Bern to push the boundaries of what is possible for athletes living with type 1 diabetes through improved performance and diabetes management. He is also working to disseminate this research to the wider diabetes and cycling communities to support Team Novo Nordisk’s mission to inspire, educate and empower people affected by diabetes.

Which talent would you most like to have?

Having recently moved to Switzerland, I need to learn Swiss German. It’s so hard!

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

It has to be the PhD. Anyone that has done one or is doing one will understand how physically and psychologically challenging this can be. 

Where would you most like to live?

It’s a tie between Copenhagen and Edinburgh – fantastic cities with so much character.

What is your most treasured possession?

My dishwasher! Owning one of these has been a lifelong dream.

Who are your favorite writers?

I read a lot. I went through a stage where I read over 40 Stephen King books. Recently I’ve been reading quite a bit by Ken Follett and I’m a big fan of Thomas Harris’ Hannibal series.  

What excites you creatively, spiritually or emotionally?

I’m extremely lucky in that I meet a lot of interesting and intelligent people almost every day through my work. I like meeting people with unique ideas that they’re willing to try out. 

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

Musician. Touring the world in a band would be so much fun!
