Race: Tour de Taiwan, Stage 2
Start/Finish: Taoyuan City to Jiaobanshan Park, Taiwan
Distance: 119 kilometers
Overview: Following yesterday’s fast circuit stage, the second stage featured the Tour de Taiwan’s first mountaintop finish and plenty of climbing over a 119-km course. However, it was pouring rain that was the most notable feature of today’s race. Treacherous rains made for dangerous descents and opened considerable time gaps in the peloton.
A crash on the first descent split the field and brought down Team Novo Nordisk’s Corentin Cherhal. Scott Ambrose and Simon Strobel were also caught behind the crash and the three chased hard to get back to the lead group. Then, with 35-km left in the race, Ambrose flatted. Despite the setbacks and poor conditions, the squad came together in a strong display of teamwork to ride to the finish just behind the main field.
“It was very hard to control the race today,” Strobel said. “The stage was really difficult with the pouring rain, sometimes it was so hard I could not see the guys in front of me.”
Results: Patrick Bevin (Avanti Racing Team) took the win while Hossein Askari (Pishgaman Yazd) finished second and Mirsamad Poorseyedigolakhour (Tabriz Petrochemical Team) came third.
Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling squad, continues racing tomorrow in Stage 3 of the Tour de Taiwan in a 143-km circuit in Changhua County.
