January 17, 2014- San Luis Argentina
Team Novo Nordisk kicks off the 2014 racing season at the Tour de San Luis on Monday. It is the team’s first appearance at the seven-day Argentinian race.
Team Novo Nordisk General Manager Vassili Davidenko said the team’s diverse line-up should allow the world’s only all-diabetes professional cycling team to make an impact on the 1,030-kilometer race that features an individual time trial around downtown San Luis and three summit finishes. The race is part of the UCI American Tour and boasts a line-up of 12 WorldTour and four pro continental teams, totaling 150 riders.
“Looking at the tests we performed at camp, the guys are ready to race,” Davidenko said. ”We are hoping to win some races this year.”
The team will look to Spaniard Javier Megias for the overall, Italian Andrea Peron and Dutchman Martijn Verschoor in the sprints, and Spaniard David Lozano on the climbs. Peron is coming off a solid 2013 season with 13 top 10 finishes, including a third place finish on stage 1 of the Tour de Beauce. Rounding out the six-man roster are Australian Chris Williams and Belgian Kevin de Mesmaeker.
Verschoor, who earned five top 10 finishes in 2013, heads into the eighth edition of the Tour de San Luis confident with his early-season form.
“My form is getting better and I think I’m ready,” Verschoor said. “I would like the team to get at least one podium and continue to use this platform to inspire people with diabetes.”
The race begins Sunday with a 166.2-km stage from San Luis to Villa Mercedes that includes one categorized climb and two intermediate sprints.
