Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team, is sending a motivated international roster that includes its star sprinter to the eight-day Tour de Korea, which begins Sunday.
The 1,295.6-kilometer Korean stage race begins in Hanam and heads south to Gurye with three early sprinting stages. By Stage 4, the race turns back north and the riders hit the mountains. Stage 6 features four categorized climbs while Stage 7 ends with a category 1 summit finish in Pyeongchang. The race concludes with a circuit race around Yangyang.
Team Novo Nordisk is bringing a six-man roster, including Stephen Clancy, Aaron Perry and Paolo Cravanzola, who all competed in last year’s Tour de Korea. One noticeable addition to this year’s roster is Italian sprinter Andrea Peron.
“This year we are bringing our best sprinter, Andrea Peron,” Team Novo Nordisk General Manager Vassili Davidenko said. “He has a good chance to win here and our entire team will be dedicated to get him on the podium.”
Peron, who amassed 14 top ten finishes in 2013, including podiums at the Tour de Beauce and Tour of China, is eager to earn his first podium of the season.
“I’m ready to try and take some results while in Korea for both me and the team,” Peron said. “I haven’t gotten the results I’d like yet this year and I’m hoping Korea will be the race that turns the season around for me.”
Davidenko said he selected the roster because he felt it gave maximum support to Peron.
“Clancy, Perry, Cravanzola and Morris are coming into this race looking for ways to showcase their abilities and their quality teamwork,” Davidenko said. “They will be looking for opportunities to get into breakaways and will be there for Peron at the finish.”
Twenty-one year old Clancy said he is looking forward to racing in Korea again because it is such a diverse race.
“I like this event because it’s unlike many of the other races I do during the season,” Clancy said. “The stages take us all over the country, with many opportunities for sprint finishes and climbs. This year, I hope to be competitive in the breakaways and to work for our fast man, Andrea Peron.”
