Race: Tour of Almaty
Distance: 186 kilometers
Kazakhstan — For the second year in a row, Team Novo Nordisk competed in the Tour of Almaty, a one-day race that took place in Kazakhstan today. Italian sprinter, Andrea Peron, was Team Novo Nordisk’s top finisher at 24th in a field including two world tour teams.
The Tour of Almaty 186-kilometer race featured a fast loop on wide roads followed by a steep climb in the final kilometers. Riders completed five laps around the 31-km course before ten riders, including 2014 Tour de France winner Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) took advantage of the exhausted peloton and made a move on the final lap. Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) came in first, followed by Sergei Chernetckii (Team Katusha) in second and Sergey Lagutin (Rusvelo) was third.
“It was a fast paced race from the start, but David Lozano and Charles Planet along with Peron fought hard, hanging on to the front of the pack for the majority of the race through several splits,” said Team Novo Nordisk General Manager Vassili Davidenko. “In the end, they were beat out by a breakaway of ten riders, but we were happy with the way everyone worked together today.”
Results: Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) took first, followed by Sergei Chernetckii (Team Katusha) in second and Sergey Lagutin (Rusvelo) in third.
Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team, will race again at the Japan Cup Cycle Road Race on October 18 and 19.
