Race: Tour de Korea, Stage 8
Start/Finish: Seoul/Seoul, Korea
Distance: 65 kilometers
Seoul, Korea — Team Novo Nordisk ended its eight-day run at the Tour de Korea with Andrea Peron sprinting to 12th place. Sunday’s race capped a successful week that included one podium, two top 5s and six top 10s finishes. In 2014, Peron earned both of Team Novo Nordisk’s top 10s at the race. This year, three separate riders netted top 10 finishes.
“The team is very happy with our performance this week. The level of commitment from everyone has been brilliant and our level of understanding each other is growing every time we race,” James Glasspool said.
A four-man breakaway escaped early into the 65-kilometer circuit race. With their overall race win nearly secure, Orica GreenEDGE was unwilling to help with the chase, so it fell to Team Novo Nordisk and Avanti Racing Team. The break was eliminated with 10 km to go. Tino Thomel (RTS-Santic Racing Team) sprinted to the win in the bunch finish with Peron finishing in 12th place.
“Our aim was to get Andrea into good position for the finish. We found out early on the Orica wasn’t willing to chase, so it was left to Avanti and us,” Glasspool said. “Chris (Williams) and David (Lozano) went to the front and helped chase the gap down. With the breakaway caught on the third lap of the circuit, all the teams were keen to move their sprinters into position. We managed to get Andrea into a position coming into the final kilometer but then we lost each other in the chaos. It was left to Andrea alone in the finish.”
Results: Tino Thomel (RTS-Santic Racing Team) took the win ahead of Patrick Bevin (Avanti Racing Team) and Wouter Wippert (Drapac Pro Cycling). Caleb Ewan (Orica GreenEDGE) won the overall race.
Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling squad, finishes racing on Sunday at the Tour de Beauce with Stage 5, a 122.4-km circuit around Saint-Georges.
