Race: Tour of China II, Stage 6
Start/Finish: Zhuhai/Zhuhai, China
Distance: 85 kilometers
Zhuhai, China — Sunday’s final stage of the Tour of China II was a short 85-kilometer race that began and ended in Zhuhai, China.
The day saw a two-man breakaway escape early into the flat stage. With around 25 km remaining, the peloton reeled in the duo, which set the stage for a bunch sprint. In the finish, Nicolas Marini (Nippo-Vini Fantini) sprinted to the win with James Glasspool finishing as Team Novo Nordisk’s best-placed rider in 28th position. Stephen Clancy moved up one spot to finish 19th overall at the six-day stage race.
“Sunday’s race was very controlled from start to finish. The only breakaway was eliminated after 50 km to go,” Team Novo Nordisk Sport Director Pavel Cherkasov said. “I feel we are getting better and better with teamwork, and the confidence only continues to grow. We are just waiting for that to translate to paper. I hope the riders keep this spirit going for the next two races in China.”
Results: Nicolas Marini (Nippo-Vini Fantini) took the win ahead of Siarhei Papok (Minsk Cycling Club) and Andriy Kulyk (Kolss BDC Team). Mattia Gavazzi (Amore & Vita-Selle SMP) held on to take the overall race win.
Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes professional cycling team, resumes racing on Tuesday with the nine-day Tour of Hainan in China.
