Race: Tour of Taihu Lake, Stage 4
Start/Finish: Wujin Yancheng Park/Xitaihu Lake, China
Distance: 113 kilometers
Xitaihu Lake, China — Strong crosswinds and an average speed of nearly 48 km/h made for a challenging Stage 4 at the Tour of Taihu Lake. Team Novo Nordisk’s Martijn Verschoor finished outside of the top 10 in 13th position.
The 113-kilometer stage saw a four-man breakaway escape without any Team Novo Nordisk riders making the group. Back in the peloton, Team Novo Nordisk’s Ben Dilley and Gerd de Keijzer rode in support of Verschoor in hopes of the race coming down to a bunch sprint. With 12 km remaining, a large crash split the field with Verschoor and de Keijzer making the front group. Due to the crash, the peloton was unable to reel in the escapees with Raffaâ Chtioui (Skydive Dubai Pro Cycling Team) soloing to the win from the breakaway.
“It was a short and flat stage that ended up being more difficult than expected with the winds, speed and crash,” Team Novo Nordisk’s Sport Director Pavel Cherkasov said.
Results: Raffaâ Chtioui (Skydive Dubai Pro Cycling Team) took the win 14 seconds ahead of Ma Guangtong (Hengxiang Cycling Team) and 30 seconds ahead of Jingbiao Zhao (Hengxiang Cycling Team).
Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes professional cycling team, continues racing at the Tour of Taihu Lake on Wednesday. The 130.6-km stage begins in Chishanhu Lake State Wetlands Park and features several climbs before finishing on Maoshan Mountain.
