Yixing Yangxian, China — Team Novo Nordisk’s Martijn Verschoor remains in the top 15 overall following Thursday’s Stage 6 of the Tour of Taihu Lake.
The 134.6-kilometer race featured eight laps around Yixing Yangxian. The flat day saw a four-man breakaway escape 35 km into the race. They gained a maximum advantage of nearly two minutes before getting reeled in with 20 km to go. The downhill finish saw a bunch sprint with overall race leader Jakub Mareczko (Southeast) taking his fourth win of the race. Verschoor finished as Team Novo Nordisk’s best-placed rider in 18th place. The Dutchman sits 14th overall, 43 seconds behind Mareczko.
“It was a fast, but controlled stage. After the breakaway went, the Southeast team maintained control and ensured they were brought back in time for a group sprint,” Team Novo Nordisk Sport Director Pavel Cherkasov said.
Results: Jakub Mareczko (Southeast) sprinted to the win ahead of Scott Sunderland (Team Budget Forklifts) and Ahmet Orken (Torku Sekerspor).
Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes professional cycling team, continues racing at the Tour of Taihu Lake on Friday. The 139.5-km stage begins in Wuxing and features an early climb and three intermediate sprints before finishing in Changxing.
