Race: Tour of Taihu Lake, Stage 9
Start/Finish: Wujiang/Wujiang, China
Distance: 90.4 kilometers
Wujiang, China —Team Novo Nordisk’s Martijn Verschoor finished 11th overall following Sunday’s Stage 9 of the Tour of Taihu Lake.
The 90.4-kilometer circuit race around Wuijang saw five riders escape and hold on until the final 20 km. Once the escapees were reeled in, the race came down to a bunch sprint with race leader Jakub Mareczko (Southeast) earning his seventh victory at the nine-day race. Verschoor finished in 13th place on the day. Mareczko held on to take the overall victory with Verschoor finishing 1:07 behind.
“Today was the last stage of the last race of the 2015 season, which meant our three remaining riders all felt motivated to try to get into the breakaway and take on the final sprint,” Team Novo Nordisk Sport Director Pavel Cherkasov said. “Martijn hadn’t recovered as much as he would have liked after yesterday’s big day in the breakaway. Everyone finished tired but with smiles.”
Results: Jakub Mareczko (Southeast) sprinted to the win ahead of Andrea Palini (Skydive Dubai Pro Cycling Team) and Andriy Kulyk (Kolss BDC Team).
