Race: Post Danmark Rundt/ Stage 2
Start/Finish: Skive to Aarhus, Denmark
Distance: 195 km
Overview: Thursday’s Stage 2 of the Post Danmark Rundt began under cloudy skies. The peloton experienced occasional showers and winds throughout the 195-km ace beginning in Skive. An early break of three was caught 40 km into the day, but quickly another trio escaped, earning a gap of more than three and a half minutes before getting caught with 45 km remaining. Several additional attacks ensued, but it came down to a bunch sprint finish.
Team Novo Nordisk’s Martijn Verschoor came with the race’s front group. “I felt like I’m racing into form and felt much better today than yesterday,” Verschoor said. “I tried to move farther up heading into the final sprint, but the pace was just too high. While I would have liked to do better, I was still happy to finish in the front group.”
Results: Andrea Guardini (Astana Pro Cycling) sprinted to the win ahead of Gerald Ciolek (MTN Qhubeka) and Matti Breschel (Tinkoff-Saxo).
The world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team continues racing at the Post Danmark Rundt on Friday with Stage 3 beginning in Skanderborg. The 175-km race features four categorized climbs and two intermediate sprints before an uphill finish in Vejle.
