Race: Vuelta Ciclista a La Rioja
Start/Finish: Logroño, Spain
Distance: 166.3 kilometers
Logroño, Spain — Team Novo Nordisk’s Andrea Peron scored his first top 10 of the season at Sunday’s Vuelta Ciclista a La Rioja.
The 166.3-kilometer Vuelta Ciclista a La Rioja began with a flurry of attacks, yet it wasn’t until 20 km into the race that eight riders escaped. The breakaway earned a gap of two and a half minutes. Team Novo Nordisk, along with several other teams, took control of the peloton and reeled the break in with approximately 50 km remaining. A sprint finish ensued in Logroño with Caleb Ewan (Orica GreenEDGE) taking the win while Team Novo Nordisk’s Andrea Peron finished ninth overall.
“It was fast from the first kilometer all the way to the finish,” Peron said. “The final two kilometers were really technical and this caused the group to split. I was feeling good today. It was nice after the difficult year I’ve had to finally get a good sprint to help rebuild my confidence.”
Results: Caleb Ewan (Orica GreenEDGE) sprinted to the win with teammate Daryl Impey (Orica GreenEDGE) taking second and Andrea Palini (Skydive Dubai Pro Cycling Team) rounding out the podium.
Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team, resumes racing on Wednesday at the Volta Ciclística Internacional do Rio Grande do Sul. The Brazilian race kicks off with a 200-km stage beginning in Sapiranga and ending in Torres.
