I think there were a lot of high nerves in the bunch today. These taught nerves were set on delivering a much cleaner race and this manifested as riders really demanding their space and taking up as much road as possible.
The pressure was pretty high early on and even when the break finally formed there wasn’t much time to really relax. If you were relaxing you were probably going to end up out the back of the bunch.
The Colombian team present really began applying some uncomfortable pace midway through the race, primarily as we were gaining elevation on the circuit, which served as a call to attention. Their motivation pretty much initiated the catch of the breakaway a few laps later. Ultimately, if you weren’t within easy reach of the front in the last couple laps you had a severely diminished chance of seeing it at the finale.
As a team, we waited too long to move up and didn’t take the initiative earlier in the race. We did make it through a tough day though, and we will be ready next time!
