Race: Gran Premio Miguel Indurain

Start/Finish: Estella, Spain

Distance: 189.1 kilometers

Estella, Spain — Team Novo Nordisk took on the hilly, 189-kilometer Gran Premio Miguel Indurain in northern Spain on Saturday.

The race kicked off with sun and strong wind, and after 30km, a breakaway of 8 riders pulled away, reaching a maximum advantage of 3:00. The Team Novo Nordisk squad remained with the peloton, controlled by Movistar.

The escapees were caught with 48km to go, and as the riders encountered Alto de Lezaun, a 10-km, category 1 climb, Movistar split the peloton and a new group emerged of 17 riders out in front.

In the race’s final kilometers, Movistar’s Alejandro Valverde made a strong attack and took the win, finishing 20 seconds ahead of Mitchelton-Scott’s Carlos Verona. Spaniard David Lozano finished with the second group, earning Team Novo Nordisk’s best result of the day at 28th.

Andrea Peron:

“It was a really tough race with a lot of wind. It was difficult weather conditions due to rain and sun alternating throughout the race. We faced really strong wind, and the pack was really tough. Now we look forward to our next race, Brabantse.”

Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team, continues racing on April 11 at the one-day De Brabantse Pijl – La Flèche Brabanconne in Belgium.
