Team Novo Nordisk opens Tour of Türkiye with solid sprint results
26 April 2026
Team Novo Nordisk kicked off the Presidential Cycling Tour of Türkiye with a composed and competitive performance, placing two riders inside the top 20 on a fast and tactical opening stage.
The day began under favorable conditions, though crosswinds were expected to play a decisive role early on. While the peloton remained alert for potential splits, the winds never fully materialized, allowing the race to settle more quickly than anticipated. A breakaway formed without excessive fighting, and the bunch maintained control throughout what became a high-speed stage.
After an opening section marked by crosswinds, the final kilometers shifted dramatically with a strong tailwind, pushing the pace from an already brisk tempo into a full-gas run toward the finish. As speeds increased, positioning became critical, particularly on the technical coastal roads in the closing phase.
Team Novo Nordisk executed its plan to support Filippo Ridolfo for the sprint, with strong teamwork throughout the day. Riders remained organized and attentive, ensuring presence at the front of the peloton as the race intensified inside the final 20 kilometers.
Declan Irvine found himself well-positioned in the decisive moments, navigating the chaotic finale with confidence.
“It was actually a really controlled day early on, but once we hit the final, it got very fast and technical,” Irvine said. “I ended up in a really good position in the last kilometer, which is encouraging. It’s been a while since I’ve been there, so it’s good to know I still have the instincts, now it’s just about getting the legs back to match.”
Unfortunately, Irvine’s chances were disrupted in the final meters after a mechanical issue, forcing him out of contention despite being ideally placed.
Veteran rider Andrea Peron also delivered a strong ride, finishing 18th after navigating a particularly aggressive finale.
“It was a typical stage here, very hectic in the last kilometers,” Peron said. “The final 5K was really crazy with a lot of risks being taken. We rode well as a team and stayed together, but I lost some positions towards the end. Still, it’s a solid start and we go again tomorrow.”
Peron’s experience proved valuable in guiding the team through the high-speed run-in, while Irvine’s 19th place underlined the team’s depth and potential heading into the remaining stages.
With a strong collective effort and promising individual performances, Team Novo Nordisk leaves Stage 1 with confidence and clear momentum as the race continues.
