Stormy Giro di Reggio Calabria makes for hard day out

16 April 2023

Racing across the Mediterranean coast In April always brings the risk of inclement weather and the heavy storms that beset the start of the Giro Ciclistico Citta Metropolitana di Reggio Calabria certainly took their toll on the beleaguered peloton.

Head sports Director Massimo Podenzana:

“It was a rough day for everyone out there and the race split heavily on the first climb and never came back together again. Peter was alone in the front group of around 35 riders the whole day until that group split on the final descent.”

“He was also unlucky with a mechanical as he was trying to chase the leaders and I think he definitely had the legs for a top ten today.”

Peter Kusztor:

“I’m really frustrated. I don’t feel like I played my cards well at all today and I think I’ll need a little time to reflect. I had good legs from the beginning and despite the mechanical late on I actually enjoyed the race, but I could have made better decisions  there at the end and maybe stood a better chance of a result.”

“Ah, everything’s easy with hindsight and considering the conditions and character of the race today then it’s not that bad, but we want to come away with more than a top 20.”
