Race: Szlakiem Walk Major Hubala, stages 2 and 3

Start/Finish: Skarzysko Kamienna-Kazimierza Welka/Busko Zdroj-Busko Zdroj, Poland

Distance: 127 kilometers / 21 kilometers

BUSKO ZDROJ, POLAND — Team Novo Nordisk woke up early on Saturday and raced their Colnagos twice on a double-stage day at the Szlakiem Walk Major Hubala race in Poland.

With an unusually early start time of 8:30 am, riders set off under cloudy summer skies across hilly fields of green for a three-hour road race that saw the early breakaway reach the finish just seconds before the peloton. A series of thunderstorms brought warm rain as the race sprinted to its end point.

After a short drive to a spa resort town with forested parks, the riders set up outside the team bus with a picnic lunch prepared by team staff before warming up ahead of a 30-minute individual time trial that began at 5:00pm.

Top performances by Joonas Henttala in the morning stage were complemented in the afternoon by Brian Kamstra’s effort in the time trial.

Team Novo Nordisk continues racing the ‘Major Hubala’ through Sunday.

DAVID LOZANO

“Two stages in one day means early start and late finish. 130km in the morning really fast, up and down the whole day, then rest a little bit in between and have some food before the time trial. Tomorrow is the last stage, and it’s going to be a fast and hard day. The overall classification will be more defined now after the time trial, and we need to find a means to get into the breakaway and play our cards there.”
