It’s important to acknowledge that diabetes is a challenge and can be tough at times but it should never define you as an athlete or person.

PROFILE

Donovan Mackie joins Team Novo Nordisk’s pro squad for 2026 at 18, and he arrives by a route none of his teammates took: the team found him.

Mackie came to Team Novo Nordisk’s attention in 2024 and attended a talent ID camp that year. He was invited back for a second camp in July 2025 and in between, he made the case himself, taking four one-day victories as an under-19 racing in Europe, including wins at Kooigem and Torhout-Rozveld in Belgium.

He had an active childhood across a range of sports, mountain biking from a young age before switching to the road and the track in his early teens. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at ten and was devastated by the news, certain it meant giving up sport. After some early difficulty, he found the opposite was true: staying active helped his diabetes management, and there was nothing he needed to give up.

He began racing seriously at under-17 level, competing in cyclocross alongside road racing, and has built up more racing experience across Europe and Australia than most riders his age.

Off the bike, Mackie enjoys camping, hiking, and time with family and friends.
