Mandy Marquardt’s Memorable Summer Included Three National Titles, A Wedding and A National Record

In the span of three weeks, Team Novo Nordisk’s Mandy Marquardt added three national titles to her palmares, celebrated her wedding and her birthday and set a new national record at the Pan American Track Cycling Championships.

Marquardt had not planned to travel to Lima, Peru for the Continental Championships this year until she found out that it was the first event of the Olympic qualification cycle.

“In June, the 2022-2024 Olympic Qualification criteria/schedule was finally released and my wedding plans were already in motion. It wasn’t the most ideal situation to get married a few days before a major competition, but life must go on. This has been a summer to remember, that’s for sure.” Marquardt explained.

At the end of July, Marquardt won the Sprint, 500m Time Trial and Team Time Trial at the 2022 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships, held at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center, PA. Marquardt, now a 25-time U.S. National Champion, also set two new track records in the 500m Time Trial and Team Sprint.

Marquardt has won the gold in the 500m Time Trial for the last six years, starting in 2016. (The 2020 U.S. Track Nationals were canceled due to the pandemic.)

The following weekend, Marquardt celebrated her wedding to Jamie Alvord, and her 31st birthday. Alvord, of Edge Racing Team, successfully defended his national title in the 1km Time Trial, Sprint and Team Sprint.

“The result reflects our continued grit and commitment to the sport, but there’s much more to it than winning. We are on this whirlwind of a journey together and we can’t thank those enough who continue to stand alongside us. We are grateful,” said Marquardt.

On August 10, Marquardt set a new national record in the Women’s Elite Team Sprint at the Pan American Track Cycling Championships, in Lima, Peru. Marquardt, Keely Kortman and Kayla Hankins clocked a time of 48.903, missing out on a bronze medal by only a few hundreds of a second against Colombia.

“It was a great week at the Pan American Track Championships in Lima, Peru with the team. I am so proud of how far we’ve come together in a short amount of time” said Marquardt. “I set a sea-level personal best in the 500m Time Trial and finished fourth. I’m not coming home with any medals, but plenty of good memories,” added Marquardt. “It is always an honor to represent the United States.”
