Pro Track Rider Mandy Marquardt Adds Two More National Titles and a Track Record at Track Nationals

20 July 2023

Team Novo Nordisk Pro Track Rider Mandy Marquardt added two more national titles, in the Keirin and 500m Time Trial at the 2023 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships, July 5-9, 2023. Marquardt, now a 27-time U.S. National Champion, also won the silver in the Sprint and the Team Sprint at the event held at the Velo Sports Center in Carson, California.

“It wasn’t ideal for Track Nationals to be between two major Olympic qualifying events, but the training continued and it was a fun week. I loved competing alongside my husband, James Alvord, who defended his 3 National Titles in the 1km TT, Sprint and Team Sprint. For the Elite Women’s Team Sprint, it was really special to ride with two upcoming powerhouse juniors from Edge Cycling. Coming off a successful Pan American Track Championships campaign in June and with Track World Championships on the horizon, I’m motivated,”  said Marquardt.

In the Elite Women 500m Time Trial qualification, Marquardt set a new track record with a time of 34.384, besting the previous time set by 4 hundreds of a second set in 2005. She then went on to clock the best time in the final to win the gold in the 500m Time Trial, a feat she has accomplished for the last seven years, starting in 2016. (The 2020 U.S. Track Nationals were canceled due to the pandemic).

In the Keirin, Marquardt maintained a controlled pace behind the motorbike. When the motor pulled off 3 to go, moves were happening and with a little over a lap to go, she charged over the top and her acceleration gapped the field and she sprinted to victory.

After setting the fastest qualification time in the Sprint, Marquardt won all her quarterfinal and semifinal heats to battle it out in the final. Ultimately, she finished second to Team Novo Nordisk ambassador, Mckenna McKee taking the gold. On the final day of the National Championships, Marquardt won silver in the Elite Women’s Team Sprint with two Edge Cycling juniors – Annika Flanigan and Divya Verma.

“Looking back at the entire season, it’s been an incredible journey with the Women’s Sprint program. We’ve really progressed in such a short amount of time as a team. We are looking ahead now towards Worlds, where we qualified a Team Sprint spot, one spot in the 500m TT and one spot in the Sprints. I am excited to be back in the mix with the world’s best and working toward Olympic qualification,” Marquardt said.

Marquardt now turns her focus to the UCI Track World Championships, August 3-9, 2023, at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow, Scotland. 2023 will be the first time that all cycling events will be contested across seven disciplines. At the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, Marquardt will compete in the 3 events – Team Sprint, 500m Time Trial and the Sprint in Glasgow.
