Steven’s was involved in sports at an early age, including Aussie Rules Football, but started focusing on the bike after attending local club runs with his father.
He went through a period of extrene weightloss and dips in performance on the bike when he was 15 years old that came to a head while Stevens was competing in the Omnium at the national championships in Adelaide. Surprised at his results and feeling worse, Stevens returned home and after a hospital visit tests revealed he had Type 1 diabetes.
Both Stevens and his family’s initial reaction was shock and surprise, but with support from doctors and friends he quickly realized that his dreams of becoming a professional cyclist need not be over and he returned to training a few days later.
