Never see diabetes as a limitation. It’s a condition that requires discipline and commitment. Listen to your body, trust yourself, and surround yourself with supportive people. Diabetes doesn’t define who you are — it makes you stronger and more aware.

PROFILE

Talented young Spanish rider Juan Jose Lopez impressed in his first season with the Team Novo Nordisk Development team in 2025 and makes the immediate jump to the pro ranks for 2026.

The now 19-year-old enjoyed a very active childhood, playing many sports before settling on cycling, both mountain bike and road before seriously pursuing the road bike when joining the prestigious Valverde Development Team as a junior.

Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was 15 years old Lopez was scared at first, but was quickly reassured by the family doctor that he didn’t have to stop playing sports and that being active would help him manage his diabetes.

After discovering Team Novo Nordisk via his doctor and a group of friends Lopez attended the Talent ID camp in Italy in 2024 and joined the Development team. Strong rides at the Czech Tour, Tour of the Gila and Tour of Hellas in 2025 confirmed Lopez as strong rouleur with an eye for a sprint and amazing potential.

Lopez was born and raised in Vélez-Rubio in the province of Almeria in the region of Andalusia in Spain and off the bike he enjoys hiking and spending time with friends and family.
