Tough Conditions Challenge Team Novo Nordisk on Hillier Stage 2 of Tour of Hainan
16 April 2026
Stage 2 of the Tour of Hainan tested riders with a hillier profile combined with intense heat and humidity. Team Novo Nordisk faced a grueling day where hydration and endurance were critical.
Bailey McDonald described the day as a long, hot battle, with 140 kilometers before the climbing action really began. The team rode well in good positions early on, focusing on staying cool and hydrated under scorching heat.
“A super long and hot day out here in China, 140km before the action really kicked off with the 3 climbs back to back. We rode well in good position in the early parts of the day doing our best to keep cool and hydrated in this weather.” – said McDonald.
Once the climbs started, the race began to split. David Lozano and Lucas Dauge fought hard at the front, staying visible and competitive until the final climb, where the extreme heat took its toll.
“David and Lucas put up a great fight riding in the front until the last climb before the heat ultimately took its toll. We continue to build and look for more opportunities later in the week.” – added McDonald
David Lozano added insight into the physical toll of the day, revealing how dehydration nearly forced him out in the closing kilometers.
“It was a really hard day with the heat and humidity. Staying hydrated was crucial, but I missed some water and couldn’t refresh myself anymore. In the last 15 km, I felt dizzy and almost fainted. I have good legs, but my body just didn’t respond.” – David Lozano.
Despite the physical challenges, the team stayed focused, supporting each other through the tough conditions. This stage underscored the importance of resilience and strategy as the race continues.
Team Novo Nordisk remains determined to adapt and push forward in the demanding environment of the Tour of Hainan.
